Background

DJ Sly Foux, a native of Petersburg, Virginia, has carved out a unique space for himself in the world of house music—an art form typically associated with venues in Chicago. Despite hailing from a region below the tri-cities of Central Virginia, he has seamlessly tapped into this vibrant genre and continues to make his mark.

Before his DJ career, Sly was immersed in rap, primarily freestyling. However, when his opportunities in that field were compromised, he made a natural transition to DJing. “Turntables became a voice for me through my hands,” he reflects. “I wanted to be honest with what I was doing and how I felt.”

Leaving adversity behind, Sly found a new outlet to share his passion for music, using his skills to create positive, high-energy experiences for his audience. His approach to DJing draws from his background in freestyle rap, and his first live set was arranged by his friend and fellow DJ, Don Chirasi.

“House music resonated with me because, while I was always drawn to EDM, I was equally passionate about hip-hop—much of which was influenced by jazz,” says Sly. “Blues legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf also inspire me when I’m crafting a set.”

Sly’s sets are a dynamic blend of classic house tracks and modern Afrobeat sounds, both of which are packed with energy and creativity.

When asked about his motivation, Sly’s response is grounded in service, not self-interest. “I’m just trying to do something for the people to keep them liberated and strong in spirit. Stay prideful and aware of who you are for self-progression—this is the message I send through house music,” he says.
